EMC Training and Mentoring Programme
The EMC offers an annual ‘training to teach’ programme for PGRs and early career historians. The programme, delivered by Dr Nick Thomas of the University of Nottingham, offers a series of six workshops on themes including teaching strategies, curriculum design, assessment, and career development, providing participants with the opportunity to consider theoretical approaches to teaching whilst also developing their practical skills. Participants also have the opportunity to learn and share practice with colleagues working in different institutions across the region, with the aim of building a genuine “community of practice” across the nine EMC institutions.
The workshops are supplemented by a mentoring programme in which participants are paired with an experienced mentor from a different EMC institution to their own. Through a number of teaching-focused discussions and observations, participants are able to share practice, discuss different perspectives on pedagogy, and develop approaches to teaching their subject in a productive and supportive setting.
