The EMC offers an annual ‘training to teach’ programme for PGRs and early career historians. The programme, was originally developed by Dr Nick Thomas of the University of Nottingham. It is currently run by Dr Matthew Hefferan (University of Nottingham). The programme offers a series of six workshops on themes including teaching strategies, curriculum design, assessment, and career development, providing participants with the opportunity to consider theoretical approaches to teaching whilst also developing their practical skills. Participants also have the opportunity to learn and share practice with colleagues working in different institutions across the region, with the aim of building a genuine “community of practice” across the nine EMC institutions.
The slideshow above shows responses from participants in a previous ‘training to teach’ workshop, navigating concerns around teaching your first class, working with silent or unresponsive students, and teaching outside your specialism.
